BioDynamic Carbon
A joint venture between Shropshire Council and Woodtek Engineering Ltd, the site removes atmospheric carbon, assisting the council in reaching their net zero targets, and generates biochar and green energy to maximise environmental outcomes.
BioDynamic Carbon
Situated at Woodtek's HQ in Powys, the operation uses the latest iteration of C1000 to continue 4 years of carbon removal and biochar production there
The opportunity
Shropshire, like all UK councils, are challenged with net zero targets which cannot be achieved by emissions reductions alone. WoodTek, with an unrivalled background in building and operating pyrolysis plants, were the ideal partner to help Shropshire become the first council in the UK to implement their own pyrolysis carbon removal site.
The solution
Using locally sourced whole tree and arboreal waste, the plant runs continuously to pyrolyse the feedstock and transform it into biochar. An automatic bagging system conveniently fills bulk bags for delivery to agricultural and horticultural customers as a soil additive to improve soil health and increase crop yields.
Registered with Puro, the site will generate CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs) issued by Puro as the carbon contained in the feedstock is sequestered into the biochar. Shropshire Council will be able to retire these carbon credits and offset the removals against their residual emissions once all possible emission reductions are made, helping them achieve their goals of becoming carbon net-neutral by 2030.
None of the heat energy generated by the pyrolysis process is wasted. The drying stage of the process is powered by it through a heat exchanger, and what remains is used to generate electricity using an ORC onsite, and to heat buildings onsite.
