Carbon Hill
Following 2 years of R&D from Woodtek, Carbon Hill took over the commercial operation of the site in 2021 has been manufacturing biochar and generating Carbon Credits since 2021.
The opportunity
With a background in the operation of biomass boilers, Woodtek saw the opportunity to deploy a first of its kind pyrolysis operation in 2018 making it a true pioneer in biochar manufacture and carbon removal.
The solution
Having worked with Woodtek through several iterations of what is now the C1000 pyrolysis unit, the Carbon Hill project has reliably manufactured biochar since 2021 and generated carbon removal credits since the methodology became available.
With over 38,000 hours of operation, it has primarily used woody feedstocks, in particular green waste and compost oversize.
It is an important contributor to the UK biochar market and serves as an important site for the industry offering feedstock trials and educational tours.
Heat from the pyrolysis process is used to dry feedstocks, with the remaining powering an ORC generating substantial electricity of up to 65 KW with some for sale to the grid, making the site continually profitable throughout its lifetime.
